Because - here's the spoiler - Santa Claus is a legend. A tall tale. A mythical figure based loosely on the work of Saint Nicholas, the Bishop of Myra in the 300s AD who gave away all his wealth to the poor and needy. (Side Note: There are no historical evidence that directly documents the man's existence. So even Saint Nicholas might be a figment of imagination.)
But every year, kids write letters to Santa Claus and set out milk and cookies for him to consume at his visit. Parents take their kids to visit local Santa Claus figures (we call them Santa's brothers), so the kids can personally tell Santa what they want. Some people even participate in "The Elf on the Shelf" game.
